Eurosport scores biggest ever viewing figures in Norway

Despite its national team falling to defeat on the pitch, Eurosport Norway’s coverage of the FIFA World Cup qualifier between Northern Ireland and Norway proved a winner with fans with over a quarter of the country tuning in as the broadcaster reported record audience numbers.

An average audience of 422,000, representing a remarkable audience share of 25.6% and an overall reach of 865,000, tuned in for the match on Sunday evening. The figure is three times the number of the previous average audience record - 149,000 for the English Football League Cup tie between Manchester United and Manchester City in 2016.

The figures are a huge boost for Eurosport Norway with its exclusive coverage of Norway’s top flight – the Eliteserien – kicking off this Saturday when newly-promoted Kristiansund entertain Molde.

Jan-Erik Aalby, Director of Sports, Eurosport and Discovery Networks Norway, said: “Unfortunately, the match wasn’t the start fans of the Norwegian team had hoped for under new coach Lars Lagerback. The ratings, however, proved to be a huge upswing for us.

“With the new season of the Eliteserien kicking off in just a week, Norwegian fans are clearly getting exciting for another season of top-class football on Eurosport.”

As well as being the Home of the Olympics from 2018 to 2024, Eurosport has established itself as one of Norway’s leading broadcasters of premium local and international sporting action. Viewers in Norway can enjoy the UEFA Europa League, Norwegian elite handball, the 2017 Ice Hockey World Championships, all four tennis Grand Slam and some of the world’s best football players in the German Bundesliga on Eurosport and Eurosport Player.
